Tangkoko
Nestled on the northern tip of Sulawesi, Tangkoko Nature Reserve is one of Indonesia’s most enchanting wildlife destinations. Established in 1919, this protected area spans over 8,700 hectares of lowland rainforest, volcanic hills, and coastal mangroves. It’s a haven for nature lovers and a highlight for any Sulawesi itinerary.
Tangkoko is best known for its rare and endemic species, including the charismatic spectral tarsier—one of the world’s smallest primates—and the critically endangered Celebes crested macaque, easily recognised by its jet-black fur and expressive face. Birdwatchers will be thrilled by sightings of hornbills, kingfishers, and the elusive maleo bird, while the forest canopy hides colourful reptiles and butterflies.
Guided treks through the reserve offer intimate encounters with wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk when the forest comes alive. The nearby Mount Dua Saudara provides a dramatic backdrop and opportunities for scenic hikes. Visitors can also explore the black sand beaches and coral reefs along the coast, adding a tropical twist to the experience.
Tangkoko offers a rare glimpse into Sulawesi’s unique biodiversity and is a must-visit for travellers seeking authentic, off-the-beaten-path adventure. It pairs beautifully with cultural experiences in nearby Manado and the highlands of Minahasa.
