Solo (Surakarta)
Located in the heart of Central Java, Solo, also known as Surakarta, is one of Indonesia’s most rewarding cultural destinations. Often considered the guardian of traditional Javanese heritage, the city was established as a royal capital in the 18th century and remains deeply connected to the customs, arts and traditions of the former Kasunanan Surakarta court. While neighbouring Yogyakarta often attracts greater attention, Solo offers a more relaxed and authentic insight into the refined culture of Java.
At the heart of the city lies the Keraton Surakarta, the former royal palace, where visitors can explore pavilions, museums and displays of royal heirlooms. Nearby, the elegant Mangkunegaran Palace showcases a fascinating collection of Javanese artefacts and continues to host traditional cultural performances. Solo is also renowned for its batik production, and visits to local workshops provide an opportunity to observe skilled artisans practising techniques that have been passed down through generations.
The city’s lively markets, including the famous Klewer Market, offer a colourful introduction to local life, while nearby temples and volcanic landscapes make rewarding day trips. Throughout the year, traditional dance, music and wayang puppet performances bring the city’s rich heritage vividly to life. Charming, cultured and welcoming, Solo provides a fascinating window into the traditions and enduring spirit of Java.
