Sri Lanka Passport & Visa Information
Back to all travel tipsWhat passport and visa do I need to visit Sri Lanka?
Passports
British visitors to Sri Lanka must travel on a full ‘British Citizen’ passport and ensure that the passport has at least six months validity from the date you intend to depart from Sri Lanka. Your passport must also have at least one blank page. Please ensure your passport complies with the above well in advance of travel. For further information please contact the Sri Lankan High Commission for advice.
Visas
Visa requirements can change at any time, so it is essential that all travellers check the latest guidance for Sri Lanka on the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website for up-to-date information. British passport holders should apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online at least 2 weeks prior to departure. The ETA is a type of visa and is valid for 30 days from the date of your arrival in Sri Lanka. There is an option to extend the ETA online if you plan to stay longer: eservices.immigration.gov.lk. ETA’s are currently issued free of charge. Once you have completed the online application please download a copy of your ETA authorisation document and have this to hand on arrival, should it be required at immigration. It is not necessary to apply for an ETA if you are transiting Sri Lanka by air, as long as your connecting flight departs within 24 hours of your arrival.
