Nakhon Ratchasima is a large city, just three hours' drive from Bangkok, and could be considered the gateway to Isaan, if arriving from the capital or nearby Khao Yai National Park.

It is here where visitors can get their first taste for delicious Isaan cuisine, with its many street-food vendors and night markets.

Also known as Korat, derived from its Khmer name, there are a number of ancient Khmer temples within driving distance of the city.

Prasat Phimai is the largest ancient Khmer Hindu temple in Thailand, and dates back to the 11th century. Architecturally it bears a striking resemblence to Angkor Wat, albeit on a smaller scale. A little further away in Buriram Province, the 10th century Khmer Hindu temple of Prasat Phanom Rung sits on top of an extinct volcano at an elevation of 402 metres, commanding stunning views.
