One of the most important cities in Central Asia, Bukhara has some buildings which have been standing for a thousand years. Some of the not-to-be-missed highlights include the peaceful Lyabi-Hauz Laza, a hub for locals and tourists to gather; the Trader’s Domes, once each dedicate to a single specialty but which now house the usual handicraft and souvenir shops; and the Ark Citadel, the royal residence for Bukhara’s emirs. The jewel in Bukhara’s crown however is undoubtedly the Poi-Kalyan Ensemble, home to the incredible Kalon Minaret, 47m tall and still standing perfectly straight after nine centuries. There are too many sights here for a single day, so try to spread your visit over a couple of days, to avoid getting history overload!
