Skardu has long held an allure for adventurers and explorers. Intrepid travellers and seasoned mountaineers have long been arriving here to trek amongst the surrounding mountains or scale the mighty K2 - the second-highest peak on Earth. With an excellent location beside the Indus River and the busiest airport in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, Skardu often serves as the entry or exit point for Pakistan’s mountainous north. There’s an abandoned fort overlooking the town, which offers panoramic views over the town and surrounding valleys. There are several points of interest which can be visited on a day trip from the town including Satpara Lake and Deosai Plateau.
