The southern side of Lake Issyk-Kul is more rugged and less built up than the northern side. There are several settlements along the southern shore, such as Tamga and Kadji-Say, which between them offer a range of simple accommodation options for adventurous tourists. Bokonbaev Village is the largest town on Lake Issyk-Kul’s southern shore. The village itself is home to a selection of friendly guesthouses, and there are some well set-up yurt camps located just out of town which accept tourists.

The south side of Lake Issyk-Kul is one of the best places in Kyrgyzstan to place to learn about local culture. Here you will encounter ample opportunities to stay overnight in a local homestay style guesthouse or a yurt camp, see local craftspeople at work, try your hand at yurt-building, and witness a traditional eagle-hunting demonstration.
