Get off the tourist radar and explore Thailand's unique Isaan region. Starting in Bangkok, travel by road up to Khao Yai National Park, before entering Isaan via Nakhon Ratchasima. Continue deeper into the northeastern region, towards Udon Thani and the Lao border, before finishing in pretty Mekong riverside Nakhon Phanom with its unique heritage and culture.

Flight: TG911 London Heathrow - Bangkok 11.50 - 06.10 (overnight)
Meet & Greet: On arrival at Bangkok Airport, you will be welcomed to Thailand by your private English-speaking guide and then transferred to your hotel to check in and relax.
Accommodation: Stay tonight at the Ariyasom Villa (Studio Room)
Morning at leisure: You have the morning at leisure. You may like to take the Skytrain to the Chao Praya River at Sathorn, and board the river ferry upstream to the Grand Palace or Wat Pho if you have not previously visited.
Afternoon guided tour of Chinatown: This afternoon, you will be met by your guide and taken on a walking tour of Bangkok's bustling Chinatown, with its many lanes, and intricate shophouses selling all kinds of goods. Later on, when vendors start setting up, try some delicious street-food the area is famous for: wonderful Thai-Chinese fusion reflecting the rich heritage of the district.

Journey from Bangkok to Khao Yai National Park: After breakfast, you will be met by your guide and driven and leaving the busy city's streets behind, head northeast towards the lush Khao Yai National Park, a journey time of around three hours. On arrival, relax in the hotel's lush gardens.

Full day sightseeing in Khao Yai National Park: After breakfast, your guide will take you into the Khao Yai National Park, where you will spend the day exploring some of the 2,168 square kilometres of rainforest and grasslands. Khao Yai translates from Thai as Big Mountain, and the highest peak within the park boundaries reaches 1,351 metres. The national park is home to a variety of wildlife, including the northern pig-tailed macaque, gibbon, elephant, Asian black bear and jackal. The park is also a haven for a plethora of birds, so ornithologists are well catered for.

Journey from Khao Yai National Park to Nakhon Ratchasima: After checking out, you will be driven approximately 3 hours to the city of Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat, from it's ancient Khmer name. Korat is considered the gateway to Isaan, and so it is here where you will be able to sample some authentic Isaan cuisine. On arrival, you guide will take you around the city, visiting local markets and sampling some mouthwatering dishes, such as the famous Isaan-style gai yang (barbequed chicken).

Full day sightseeing at ancient Khmer temples: Spend the day with your guide exploring the ancient Khmer Hindu temples of Prasat Phimai and Prasat Phanom Rung. These temples are in an area that was once part of the vast Khmer Empire with Angkor Wat at the helm.
Prasat Phimai, just north of Ubon Ratchathani is the largest ancient Hindu temple in Thailand, and was build in the 11th century, in a style very similar to Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
Situated further south in Buriram Province, Phanom Rung is located on top of an extinct volcano, and dates back to the 10th century. Note, the area that covers Phanom Rung is temporarily restricted.
Return to your hotel in the evening to relax or enjoy wandering the city at leisure.

Journey from Nakhon Ratchasima to Udon Thani: After checking out, set off north to the bustling city of Udon Thani, along the way passing through rural Isaan with its stunning scenery. The journey time is around 5 hours non-stop, but you may like to stop along the way to take in the scenery. On arrival, check into your rural villa accommodation where you can relax and enjoy the stunning views.

Full day sightseeing around Udon Thani: After a leisurely breakfast your guide will meet you and take you on a full day guided tour around the area, which will include a visit to Ban Chiang, an archaeological site that houses fascinating artefacts from one of the world's oldest Bronze Age civilizations, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will also head into Udon Thani centre to take in the atmosphere of the fascinating city, including a visit to the Udon Thani City Museum, and the Thai-Chinese Cultural Centre. Return to your accommodation to relax for the remainder of the day.

A day at leisure to relax in rural Isaan: You have the day at leisure to relax, use the pool, enjoy the scenery, or go for a walk or cycle around the surrounding farmland. Today is all about soaking up the vibe of rural Isaan.

Journey from Udon Thani to Sakhon Nakhon: After checking out, your guide will meet you in to drive out to Sakhon Nakhon, a journey of around two hours. On arrival, check into your accommodation, and have the remainder of the day at leisure.
Dinner at House No. 1712: This evening have a dinner of speciality award-winning beef. Known as Pon Yang Kham, the reknowned breed of cattle was developed in the 1980s, and is praised for its natural marbling and flavour, and is even said to rival Kobe beef. The cattle are raised in a clean environment and on a strictly organic diet.

Full day sightseeing in Sakhon Nakhon: Sakhon Nakhon sits on the western edge of the largest lake in the Isaan region. Spend the day with your guide exploring Sakhon Nakhon and the wider area. One of the highlights is the village of Tha Rae which sits just on the northern shore of Nong Han Lake. Tha Rae features a unique fusion of Thai-French architecture, and is home to Thailand's largest Catholic community.

Journey from Sakhon Nakhon to Nakhon Phanom: After a leisurely morning, you will be driven east to Nakhon Phanom, and to your hotel overlooking the Mekong River, and across to neighbouring Laos. The journey time is approximately 90 minutes.
Afternoon sightseeing in Nakhon Phanom: Spend the afternoon sightseeing in the pretty riverside town. Visit the Naga monument, clock-tower, former governor's house, and St Anna Cathedral, as well as taking in the scenic Mekong River views. Have lunch in a local restaurant sampling the local Thai-Lao-Vietnamese fusion cuisine.

Sightseeing in Nakhon Phanom: Rise early this morning to participate in alms giving, then visit one of the most important Buddhist temples in the country, Wat Pra That Phanom. After spending some time at the beautiful temple, continue to nearby Pra That Marukkanakhon where you can try your hand at making a banana-leaf offering. Following this, visit the neaby Nathon Cultural Tourism Community. Run by the Thai Guan minority group, here you will learn about their culture, and the handicraft techniques that have been handed down from previous generations. After lunch at the centre, return to your hotel to relax and enjoy the river views.
